Sealants are used to help teeth from being exposed to decay and bacteria. Dr. Primley generally applies sealants to the teeth that are most susceptible to decay, your molars. At Caldera Dental Group, we can help decrease the incidence of you, or your child, developing tooth decay and protect your teeth using dental sealants.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants is a liquid resin material that Dr. Primley paints with a small brush onto the surface of your teeth. This is a painless procedure that does not cause discomfort or require any type of anesthesia. Sealants are clear, and can not be seen by others. Sealants are applied quickly and in only one office visit. Following its application, sealants will dry hard, and remain on the surface of your teeth for many years. Dr. Primley will check the status of your sealants at your regular dental checkups. Applying dental sealants during childhood will protect the teeth from decay through the most cavity prone years.
Who should get sealants?
Without dental fillings or other dental work, we believe that you will extend the life of your teeth. Dr. Primley highly recommends this simple, painless, procedure.
Dr. Primley recommends that patients who fit the following criteria consider dental sealants.
|•||All child patients who have some or most of their adult teeth.|
|•||All adult patients who have continuous problems with cavities or decay.|
Why should I have dental sealants?
The idea of kids and cavities have traditionally gone hand in hand. Though this thought may sound normal, it has never been a good idea. Your child's oral health can be an indicator of their oral health into adulthood. With dental sealants, more and more children are reaching adulthood without ever experiencing a cavity. Sealants guard your teeth from food settling in hard to reach nooks and crannies, and guards your teeth from decay. We recommend sealants for all children and for adults who have continuous problems with decay.
The natural grooves of your molars can trap food. This area can be missed by casual brushing and rinsing. If left in place, this trapped food allows bacteria to multiply, eventually causing tooth decay. Cavities and root canals can lead to costly and uncomfortable problems.
At Caldera Dental Group, we love sealants. They are a cost-effective, preventative measure that will reduce the chances of tooth decay, however, they do not replace the need for regular brushing and flossing.
Sealants are an important preventive measure. Though, our patients must be aware that sealants protect only the area that they were applied on. Even with sealants, we recommend regular, daily brushing, flossing, a healthy balanced diet, limited snacking, and regular dental hygiene cleanings with dental exams. Together, all of these steps are essential to a healthy cavity free mouth.
