What are Veneers?
Dental veneers - sometimes called porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers - are very thin, custom-made porcelain "shells" that cover an existing tooth. Veneers are purely cosmetic, designed to perfectly encapsulate the front of the tooth. The result is a new and improved attractively beautiful smile!
Veneers have the capability of completely reshaping not only teeth, but an entire smile. They can be cosmetically used to fix misshapen teeth, misaligned teeth, and discolored teeth.
Just as you would expect from most all dental restorations, dental veneers may eventually need replacement. However, given proper care and oral hygiene your veneers should offer you a long-lasting exquisitely beautiful smile for many years to come!
What Will Dental Veneers Fix?
Veneers can fix most all cosmetic issues, but are most commonly used to:
|•||Fix teeth that are worn down
|•||Reshape or fix broken or chipped teeth
|•||Reshape teeth that are poorly shaped (pointy for example)
|•||To cover teeth that are discolored
|•||To fix teeth that are uneven or misaligned
|•||To close spaces or gaps between teeth|
Dental Veneers - The Procedure
The process of getting veneers generally will take two visits to complete. The first for a consultation - to ensure that veneers are a viable option for the patient - as well as fitting for the veneers, and a second to apply the veneers. The process of placing a veneer can be done to one or many teeth at once.
The first step of the process is to explain to us what it is that you want in your new smile. We will take x-rays of the teeth to be covered. We will then discuss with you the plan and any limitations that may lie in the way of giving you that smile you dream of.
In most cases, a local anesthetic will be administered, but not in all. We will then begin by removing a minimal amount of enamel from the tooth or teeth to be covered. Once the tooth enamel is removed, we will take an impression of the tooth or teeth to be covered. You and Dr. Primley will then select the shape and color of your new teeth. The impressions will need to be sent off to a laboratory for veneer fabrication, which generally takes 1-2 weeks. If necessary, you will receive temporary veneers in the meantime.
Once the veneers are in, you will return to our office for fitting and placement. The veneer will be tested for optimal fit and then the tooth or teeth will be prepared for placement. The surface will be cleaned and etched to prepare for bonding of the veneer. A special cement will be applied to the surface and the veneer put in place. With use of a special light that activates the chemicals used in bonding the veneer will be permanently set to the tooth or teeth. A quick clean up and bite test and you will be on your way to your new beautiful smile!
After your dental veneer procedure is complete, Dr. Primley will provide you with special care instructions to extend the life you your new smile. Practicing proper oral hygiene - such as brushing, flossing and regular dental visits - will result in a long-lasting beautiful smile that you can wear proudly!
